Drinks are energy that rarely lands in a food log. This page uses typical serving calories for beer, light beer, wine, spirits and cider, then sets one sitting and a weekly pattern against your estimated TDEE and a moderate walk.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans treat alcohol as empty calories if you drink, and they cap moderate intake at two drinks a day for men and one for women who drink. NIAAA defines a US standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol. This form is about energy, not a safe-drinking certificate.

What a typical serving is worth

The figures on this form are typical US serving energies used in dietary guidance tables: regular beer about 153 kcal per 355 ml (12 fl oz), light beer 103 kcal, table wine 125 kcal per 148 ml (5 fl oz), 40% ABV spirits 97 kcal per 44 ml (1.5 fl oz), cider about 140 kcal per 355 ml.

Mixers are not in the spirit row. A 97 kcal shot plus 150 kcal of cola is 247 kcal. A creamy cocktail can exceed 400. If you drink mixed drinks, count the mixer or pick a higher sitting total.

NIAAA's standard drink is 14 g of alcohol, which those serving sizes roughly match. A home pour of wine is often 180 to 200 ml, which is closer to 160 to 170 kcal before you start a second glass.

Share of TDEE and the hidden week

TDEE is Mifflin-St Jeor times your activity factor, the same estimate as the rest of this site. Two regular beers at 306 kcal are about 13% of a 2,300 kcal day. They are also a full planned deficit for someone cutting at 300 kcal.

Weekly drink calories are the sitting times the number of days like that. Two sittings of 306 kcal are 612 kcal a week, about 0.08 kg of tissue on the 7,700 kcal/kg line if they sit on top of maintenance. Four sittings are a slow bulk you did not plan.

The check-in calculator will call that a logging miss if the drinks never reached the average daily intake box.

The walk row is a teaching device

Minutes of moderate walking use 3.5 MET at your weight, the same moderate-walk MET as the walking calculator. At 70 kg that is about 4.3 kcal a minute, so 306 kcal is about 71 minutes. The point is the size of the sitting, not a workout prescription.

You cannot spot-reduce a night out. You can decide the night is worth it and keep the rest of the week honest, or you can cut the pour. Do not add a punishment walk that wrecks the next day's training.

WHO activity minutes are for health. They are not a tab you settle after drinks.

Alcohol, appetite and the log

Alcohol lowers restraint and raises energy intake at the next meal for many people. The sitting kcal on this page is the drink only. The pizza that followed is a second line. If you log drinks but not the meal they unlocked, the check-in will look 'mysterious'.

Ethanol is about 7 kcal per gram, between carbohydrate and fat. The body uses it first, which can push dietary fat toward storage while the drink is metabolised. That is chemistry, not a moral. It is another reason a 'light' drinking week still moves the waist.

Dietary Guidelines 2020-2025 say that drinking less is better for health than drinking more, and that people who do not drink should not start for health. This page will not invent a cardio benefit to keep a surplus.

Moderate-drinking caps are not calorie caps

Two drinks a day for men and one for women who drink is a health cap in US guidance, not a calorie budget. Fourteen beers a week at 153 kcal is about 2,100 kcal, a full sedentary day for some adults, still inside a 'moderate' count if spread out.

NIAAA also describes binge patterns (about 5 drinks for men or 4 for women in two hours). This form will compute 6 drinks in a sitting if you enter them. It will not call that moderate.

Pregnancy, driving, medications and liver disease are clinician topics. Close the form.

What to do with the number

If drinks are the leak, put them in the daily average you type into the check-in and deficit tools. If you want them in the week, cut the same energy elsewhere or add a walk you would have done anyway, not a 90-minute punishment.

The fibre and protein pages still apply on drinking days. A sitting that replaces dinner protein is a lean-mass sitting.

Walk match

Minutes = sitting kcal ÷ (3.5 × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200)

Worked example: two regular beers, twice a week, 70 kg, TDEE 2,300

  1. One sitting = 2 × 153 = 306 kcal, about 13% of 2,300 kcal TDEE.
  2. Weekly drink calories = 306 × 2 = 612 kcal, about 4% of a 16,100 kcal week.
  3. On the 7,700 kcal/kg line, 612 kcal is about 0.08 kg of tissue if it sits above maintenance every week.
  4. Moderate walk match at 70 kg: 3.5 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 4.29 kcal/min. 306 ÷ 4.29 ≈ 71 minutes.
  5. A 180 ml home wine pour at about 21 kcal per 30 ml is near 126 kcal, not the 125 kcal of a 148 ml table serving if you pour heavier. Count the glass you actually use.

Frequently asked questions

Are these USDA FoodData Central numbers?

They are typical serving energies in the same family as US dietary guidance tables for beer, wine and spirits. This page does not deep-link FoodData Central, which is outside the source list we show. NIAAA's standard drink (14 g alcohol) and the Dietary Guidelines alcohol chapter are the public references. A craft beer at 8% ABV or a 200 ml wine pour will beat the typical row. When the label prints kcal, use the label.

Does alcohol stop fat burning?

While ethanol is being metabolised, the body uses it first, which can temporarily reduce fat oxidation. That is hours, not a week-long lock. The larger effect is the calories in the glass plus the meal you ate because restraint fell. A 600 kcal weekly drink habit on top of maintenance is slow gain on the 7,700 line whether or not Saturday night 'paused' fat burn for an evening.

Is spirits 'better' because 97 kcal looks small?

The shot is small. The mixer often is not. Two rum-and-colas can exceed two beers. Dry wine at a measured 148 ml is a middle path. Light beer is the lowest row on this table per typical can. 'Better' for energy means measured pours and no sugar mixer, not a moral ranking of drinks. Health risk is a separate NIAAA conversation.

Can I drink and still lose fat?

Yes, if weekly energy stays below expenditure. The drinks have to sit inside the deficit, not on top of it. Many people do better with drinks planned on one night and logged, rather than 'not counting' because alcohol is not food. Use this sitting total in the average daily intake you give the check-in calculator. If waist is up after three weeks of 'moderate' nights, the pours were not moderate in kcal.

Why do you show a walk instead of a run?

Moderate walking is the session most people can actually do the next day, and it uses the same 3.5 MET as the walking calculator, so the minutes match that page. A run would shrink the minutes and make the sitting look cheaper. The teaching point is 'this is a long walk', not 'sprint it off'. Punishment cardio after drinking is a bad habit and a bad ankle plan.

What does moderate drinking mean on this site?

We repeat the Dietary Guidelines cap (up to two drinks a day for men, one for women who drink) and NIAAA's standard-drink definition so the energy math has a public health frame. We do not certify that two drinks are safe for you. Pregnancy, liver disease, medications, binge patterns and under-21 laws (or 18 here as our site floor) are outside a calorie form. If you do not drink, nothing on this page is a reason to start.
