A reverse diet is the exit from a cut: you raise daily calories in 50, 100 or 150 kcal steps each week until you reach estimated maintenance, instead of jumping from a deficit to a surplus overnight.

The first kilograms back are usually glycogen and water, not a failed cut. Hall's energy-imbalance work is why this site treats maintenance as a moving number. Adaptive expenditure falls during a deficit; some of it returns as you eat more and move more. The table is a plan for learning that new maintenance, not a promise that weight will stay glued.

Why you do not jump straight to TDEE

After a cut, the intake that used to be a deficit can be closer to the new, lower expenditure than the equation still prints. Jumping to the old TDEE in one day is how a reverse becomes an unplanned surplus. Small weekly steps let you watch the weekly average and the waist before the next raise.

Rosenbaum and Leibel described adaptive thermogenesis: expenditure can sit below what mass and activity would predict after weight loss. Some of that gap closes as calories and carbohydrate come back. You will not see the close on day one.

This site still uses Mifflin TDEE as the ceiling of the table. If your observed holding intake is lower, you will find it when weight and waist rise before the last row. Then you stop and call that row maintenance.

How the week-by-week table is built

Maintenance is Mifflin-St Jeor times the activity factor. The gap is that TDEE minus current intake. Weeks equal the gap divided by the step, rounded up. Each row adds one step, and the last row is capped at TDEE.

If current intake is already at or above TDEE, the table is a single 'already there' row. Use the TDEE page and the surplus calculator if the next goal is a lean gain, not a reverse.

Activity is still the weak point. One level too high makes the ceiling 200 to 400 kcal too generous and the reverse will overshoot. If in doubt, pick the lower level.

Glycogen and water are not fat regain

A gram of glycogen binds about three grams of water. Raising carbohydrate as calories rise will refill muscle and liver glycogen that the cut emptied. 0.2 to 0.6 kg on the scale in the first fortnight is the usual picture, sometimes more after a long, low-carb cut.

Waist is the check. Fat regain at the abdomen moves the tape. Water from glycogen is more whole-body and often sits with fuller training. If the weekly average climbs for three weeks and waist is up, treat it as energy, not water.

The check-in calculator can compare a holding intake with the scale once you are near the top of the table. Do not use a single morning after the first higher-carb week as a verdict.

What adaptive expenditure does on the way up

Hall's Lancet model showed that a static calorie rule misses how expenditure follows mass. On the way up, some of the missing calories return as you weigh more and fidget more. That is why a reverse can feel 'easier' than the same number during the cut.

It is also why the last 100 kcal may not be needed. If weight is stable for three weeks at a row below TDEE, that row is your current maintenance. Stay there. Re-run TDEE after a 3% weight change.

A reverse is not a medical therapy for a 'damaged metabolism'. Thyroid disease and drugs belong with a clinician. This page only schedules food.

Macros while the calories rise

Keep protein near 1.6 to 2.2 g per kilogram so the extra calories are less likely to be stored while you are still under true maintenance. Add the weekly step as carbohydrate first if training quality was the thing you missed, or as a mix if hunger is the thing you missed.

The macro calculator will split each new row. Fat should stay high enough to keep hormones and meals palatable. This site will not plan a fat intake that starves the diet of essential fatty acids.

Alcohol is still energy. A weekend that adds 400 kcal will look like a failed reverse on Monday. Log it or skip the raise that week.

When the reverse is finished

Finished means you have eaten at a holding intake for several weeks with a stable average weight and a stable waist. That intake may be the estimated TDEE or a row below it. Then you either hold, or you open the surplus calculator for a planned lean gain.

Do not start a new cut the week the table ends. The point of the reverse is to practise maintenance. The metabolic-adaptation guide on this site is the longer reading.

Children and teenagers are out of scope. Adult energy maths does not run under 18 on this site.

How it's calculated

Weeks to estimated TDEE

Weeks = ceil((TDEE − current intake) ÷ weekly step)

Step is 50, 100 or 150 kcal. Each week is capped so it never exceeds TDEE.

Week n intake

Daily kcal = min(TDEE, current intake + n × step)

If current intake is already at or above TDEE, weeks = 0.

Worked example: 1,700 kcal now, TDEE 2,300, 100 kcal steps

  1. A 35-year-old man, 178 cm, 80 kg, sedentary: Mifflin BMR = 10×80 + 6.25×178 − 5×35 + 5 = 1,742.5 kcal.
  2. Sedentary TDEE = 1,742.5 × 1.2 = 2,091 kcal. From 1,700 kcal the gap is 391 kcal.
  3. At 100 kcal a week, weeks = ceil(391 ÷ 100) = 4. Week 1 is 1,800, week 2 is 1,900, week 3 is 2,000, week 4 is 2,091.
  4. Expect 0.2 to 0.6 kg on the scale as glycogen returns in the first fortnight. That is not four weeks of fat at 7,700 kcal/kg.
  5. If week-3 average weight is up and waist is up, stop at 2,000 kcal and call that maintenance instead of taking week 4.

Frequently asked questions

Is reverse dieting proven to raise metabolism more than just eating more?

There is no large trial that shows a special metabolic bonus from 100 kcal steps versus jumping to maintenance. What the steps buy is control: you see the weekly average and the waist before the next raise. Adaptive thermogenesis is real in the weight-loss literature, but it is not a switch you flip with a branded reverse. This page is an exit schedule, not a hormone protocol. If someone sells a reverse as a metabolism repair, they are selling the word.

How much weight should I expect to regain?

Early on, 0.2 to 0.6 kg is the usual glycogen and water picture, sometimes more after a long low-carb cut. Fat regain looks like a rising weekly average plus a rising waist over three weeks. The 7,700 kcal per kilogram line says 500 extra kcal a day is about 0.45 kg of tissue a week, but the first week of a reverse is not a clean 500 kcal surplus because expenditure is still catching up. Use waist, not a single morning.

Should I reverse or just go straight to maintenance?

If the gap is under about 200 kcal, going straight to estimated TDEE is fine and this table will be one or two rows. If you have been 500 to 800 kcal down for months, steps reduce the chance that the equation TDEE is still too high for the smaller, more economical body you have now. Pick 50 kcal weeks if you are anxious about regain, 150 if you are exhausted and the gap is large.

Do I keep the same macros while calories rise?

Keep protein in grams roughly constant (1.6 to 2.2 g/kg). Add the weekly step as carbohydrate if training quality is the priority, or split it if meals need more fat to be palatable. The macro calculator will rebuild the split each time you raise. Do not drop protein to 'make room' for the extra calories. Protein is the cheap insurance on the way up as well as the way down.

What if I am already above TDEE?

The table stops and says you are already there. You are not reversing; you are in a surplus or you picked an activity level that is too low. Open the TDEE page, look at all five activity factors, and decide whether the next tool is a hold or the surplus calculator. A reverse is only for climbing out of a deficit.

Can I reverse while still losing fat?

Sometimes the first small raises still leave you below true expenditure, so fat can keep falling while the scale is noisy. Do not plan on that. The aim of this page is to reach a hold, not to sneak a cut inside a reverse. If fat loss is still the goal, stay on the deficit calculator and the check-in, and do not call it a reverse.
