The military services have screened body composition for forty years with tape-based circumference methods derived from the same 1984 Naval Health Research Center research this calculator uses. One thing has to be said before that number means anything. In July 2026 the Army replaced the height and weight tables, the circumference tape test and the supplemental body fat assessments with a single waist-to-height ratio, and set compliance at a ratio below 0.55. The percent body fat limits in AR 600-9 Table B-2 are reproduced on this page because they remain the Army's published body fat figures and the yardstick this estimate is measured against, but they are no longer the number a soldier is screened on twice a year.

So the page is useful for two things. First, composition: a tape estimate gives you a body fat percentage, which a ratio does not, and shows how far that percentage sits from the limit for your age band. Second, honesty about the gap between a self-measurement and an official one. An assessment of record is taken by trained personnel under prescribed procedure; everything here is a self-taping with an error band printed beside it.

What the Army measures today

On 7 July 2026 the Army announced that the height and weight screening tables, the circumference-based tape test and the supplemental body fat assessments had all been replaced by one measurement: the waist-to-height ratio. A soldier's waist is taken at the navel and divided by their height in the same unit, and a ratio below 0.55 is compliant. The assessment happens twice per calendar year. A soldier at 0.55 or above is retested the same duty day as a confirmation, and a confirmed result leads to a flag and enrolment in the Army Body Composition Program. The Army also said no separation actions would follow a waist-to-height failure during the initial 180-day period while it validates the new measure.

That change followed the Department of Defense instruction that governs all of this, DoDI 1308.03, which explicitly permits a service to assess body composition by body fat calculation, waist-to-height ratio, abdominal circumference, height and weight screening, or any combination of those. The waist-to-height ratio was always an allowed method; in 2026 the Army made it the only one.

Descriptions of the one-site tape test as the Army's current screen (and there are many still in circulation) were accurate between June 2023 and July 2026, and are now history. What this page adds is the thing a ratio cannot give you: an estimate of how much of your mass is fat.

The AR 600-9 standards and how the age bands work

Table B-2 of AR 600-9, as transmitted by ALARACT 046/2023, sets the maximum allowable percent body fat in four age bands. For men: 20% at ages 17–20, 22% at 21–27, 24% at 28–39 and 26% at 40 and older. For women, each band sits ten points higher: 30%, 32%, 34% and 36%. Those are the figures the result panel compares your estimate against, and the table is printed on this page whether or not you enter anything.

The bands step upward with age because body composition does. Lean mass declines and fat mass rises through adult life at a fairly predictable rate even when weight is stable, and a standard that ignored that would screen out experienced personnel for a change that happens to almost everyone. The ten-point offset between men and women reflects the difference in essential fat: the minimum a body needs for hormonal and organ function is around 2–5% in men and 10–13% in women, and every interpretation scale carries a similar gap.

These are limits, not targets. A number below the limit for your age band is compliant and says nothing else: not about fitness, not about health, and not about the person carrying it. The band boundaries are also hard edges applied to a soft measurement, which is why the margin printed beside your result matters more than which side of the line it falls.

The three methods AR 600-9 authorised, and which one this page uses

The 2023 guidance recognised three ways of establishing a soldier's body fat. The first was the multi-site circumference tape method of AR 600-9 Appendix B, the Hodgdon–Beckett equations, using neck and waist for men and neck, waist and hips for women. The second was a one-site circumference method: abdominal circumference taken at the navel, measured three times to the nearest half inch and averaged, combined with body weight in pounds. The third was a supplemental assessment by DXA scan, InBody 770 bioelectrical impedance or BodPod, available after a failed tape test and confirmation test.

This calculator uses the multi-site method, and the reason is worth stating plainly: the one-site method was never published as an equation. Its results come from lookup tables (figures B-1 for men and B-2 for women) that pair an abdominal circumference with a body weight and read off a percentage. Several sites publish a reverse-engineered formula that claims to reproduce those tables. We do not, because a fitted curve through someone else's table is not the standard and cannot be audited against it, and because a number that looks official but is not is worse than no number.

The multi-site method has no such problem. Its coefficients were published in full in 1984, they are written out on this page, and our test suite cross-checks the centimetre form against the inch form on every build. It was an authorised Army method under the 2023 guidance, and it remains the most widely validated circumference method there is.

How an official taping differs from a self-taping

An assessment of record controls the variables that a bathroom measurement cannot. It is taken by trained personnel at prescribed anatomical landmarks, with a non-stretch tape held level and snug without compressing the tissue. Repeated passes are averaged, and readings that disagree beyond a set tolerance are retaken. A failing result is confirmed by a second assessment on the same duty day, which may be conducted by different personnel.

A self-taping controls none of that. Reaching around your own back tilts the tape upward at the spine, which reads low; measuring after a workout, a meal or a long flight shifts circumference by a centimetre or more; and the temptation to breathe out hard and hold is difficult to resist when a number matters. Expect a consistent offset between what you measure at home and what an official assessment produces. A stable offset is still useful (it means your own series tracks change correctly), but it is not a prediction.

The honest use of this page is therefore to know roughly where you stand and to watch the direction of travel, not to estimate whether you will pass. When the margin printed with your result is smaller than three or four percentage points, the method cannot distinguish pass from fail, and saying so is the only accurate thing a calculator can do.

The fitness-test exemption

Under the rules introduced in 2023, a soldier who scored 540 or more on the Army Combat Fitness Test with a minimum of 80 points in every event was exempt from the body fat assessment, even if they exceeded the height and weight screening table. The logic was straightforward: the screening table exists as a proxy for readiness, and a demonstrated performance standard is a better measure of readiness than a proxy for it.

That exemption applied to an assessment the July 2026 directive has since replaced. Whether an equivalent performance exemption attaches to the waist-to-height standard is a question for the current regulation and your chain of command, not for a calculator, and this is exactly the kind of detail that changes between publication dates. Check the governing directive rather than any website, this one included.

What happens if a measurement exceeds the standard

A first exceedance triggers a confirmation assessment on the same duty day. If that confirms the result, the soldier is flagged (an administrative suspension of favourable actions) and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program, where progress is reviewed at intervals until the standard is met. While flagged, a soldier is generally ineligible for promotion, for attendance at professional military schools, and for reenlistment or certain assignments, and the flag is lifted when the standard is met.

Historically, failure to make satisfactory progress over an extended period could lead to separation proceedings. The Army has stated that no separation actions will follow a waist-to-height failure during the initial 180-day period while the new measure is validated, which makes the current position unusually specific and unusually temporary. Anyone facing this should read the directive in force on the day, not a summary.

It is worth separating the administrative machinery from what the measurement means. A circumference is a description of a body's dimensions on one morning, with a known error band. Enrolment in a programme is a procedural consequence of a number crossing a threshold. Neither is a statement about a person's competence, character or contribution, and the regulation does not claim otherwise.

The supplemental assessment route

The 2023 guidance gave a soldier who failed both the tape test and the confirmation test the right to request a supplemental assessment by a more direct method: a DXA scan, an InBody 770 bioelectrical impedance analyser, or a BodPod air-displacement plethysmograph. The rationale is the one this site repeats everywhere: circumference equations misread muscular builds in a predictable direction, and a soldier who carries a lot of lean mass can fail a tape test at a body fat percentage that a scan puts comfortably inside the limit.

The July 2026 announcement folded those supplemental body fat assessments into the change, replacing them along with the tape test. What remains available in practice varies by installation and by the guidance current at the time, so treat the supplemental route as something to ask about rather than something to assume.

If you are trying to settle the question for yourself rather than for a record, a DXA scan at a sports science laboratory or a university is typically the most accessible of the three and repeats to within about a percentage point. A BodPod is comparable. Bioelectrical impedance is the cheapest and the most sensitive to hydration, which is why a reading taken after training tends to flatter you.

How to bring a tape-test result down honestly

Both the tape estimate and the waist-to-height ratio are dominated by one measurement. In the male equation, the term that moves is the difference between waist and neck: a centimetre off the waist is worth roughly seven-tenths of a percentage point of estimated body fat, and the neck barely changes on any timescale that matters. In the ratio, the waist is the entire numerator. There is no second lever.

The only durable way to shrink a waist is to lose abdominal fat, and the arithmetic for that is unglamorous. A moderate calorie deficit planned from your maintenance needs, protein around 1.6–2.2 g per kilogram of body weight to protect lean mass while you are in deficit, resistance training two or three times a week, and enough sleep that appetite regulation works. A loss of half a kilogram to one kilogram a week is the usual sustainable band, and it shows up as roughly a centimetre of waist per kilogram of fat.

The manipulations that circulate before assessments (dehydration, salt loading, saunas, fasting for a day, a hard session the morning of) move a waist by a centimetre or two for a few hours and reverse within a day. They also degrade the performance the assessment exists to protect, and they make your own tracking series useless, because you can no longer tell a real trend from a dehydrated morning.

The other services and the Department of Defense limits

No service sets its own standard from scratch. DoDI 1308.03 requires that where a service uses a body fat standard, it is set no higher than 26% and no lower than 18% for men, and no higher than 36% and no lower than 26% for women. Every service limit you will see, including the AR 600-9 table on this page, sits inside those bounds: the Army's oldest age band is at the male ceiling of 26% and the female ceiling of 36%.

The same instruction allows body composition to be assessed by body fat calculation, waist-to-height ratio, abdominal circumference, height and weight screening, or a combination, which is why the services have historically differed in method while converging on similar limits. The Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard each publish their own instruction, their own tape procedure and their own age bands, and a percentage calculated here is not directly comparable to any of them.

Through 2026 the services moved together toward waist-to-height screening, with the Navy adopting the same 0.55 cutoff the Army uses and other services publishing their own figures in that region. The published direct forms (inches)

Equivalent to the density form but calibrated on inches. Mixing units between the two forms shifts a result by six to seven percentage points, which is why calculators disagree.

Both are shown with your result when you add weight and age. They read from BMI alone, so they run high for muscular builds, the opposite bias to the tape method.

Margin to the standard

Positive is below the limit. Compare the margin with the ±3–4 point error band before reading anything into it.

Worked example: a soldier of 178 cm and 84 kg, aged 26

  1. Take the measurements: height 178 cm, neck 39 cm, waist 94 cm at the navel at the end of a normal breath out, three passes averaged.
  2. Subtract neck from waist: 94 − 39 = 55 cm.
  3. Log and scale that term: log10(55) = 1.7404, and 1.7404 × 0.19077 = 0.3320.
  4. Log and scale the height term: log10(178) = 2.2504, and 2.2504 × 0.15456 = 0.3478.
  5. Assemble the body density: D = 1.0324 − 0.3320 + 0.3478 = 1.0482 g/cm³.
  6. Convert with Siri: 495 ÷ 1.0482 = 472.2, minus 450 = 22.2% estimated body fat.
  7. Find the age band: 26 years falls in the 21–27 band, where the AR 600-9 limit for men is 22%, so this estimate is two-tenths of a point above the limit.
  8. Apply the error band before concluding anything: the honest range is 18.7% to 25.7%, so a margin of 0.2 points is invisible to the method, and a second taping by another person could land either side of it.
  9. Compute the measure the Army actually screens on: 94 ÷ 178 = 0.53, below the 0.55 threshold in force since July 2026, compliant on the current standard while sitting a fraction over the older body fat figure.
  10. See what would move both numbers: three centimetres off the waist gives 20.1% and a ratio of 0.51, which for someone this size is roughly two kilograms of fat, not a week of dehydration.

Is this the exact test the Army uses?

No, and as of July 2026 the Army no longer uses a tape test at all: it screens on a waist-to-height ratio, with compliance below 0.55. This page runs the multi-site Hodgdon–Beckett equations, which AR 600-9 Appendix B authorised, and compares the result against the published Table B-2 limits. That gives you a composition estimate and a sense of where you sit against the Army's body fat figures, but it is a self-taping, not an assessment of record.

How can I lower my tape-test result honestly?

The tape estimate and the waist-to-height ratio are both dominated by the waist measurement, and the only durable way to shrink it is genuine fat loss: a moderate calorie deficit planned from your maintenance calories, protein around 1.6–2.2 g per kilogram to protect lean mass, and strength training two or three times a week. Expect roughly a centimetre of waist per kilogram of fat lost. Dehydration and crash tactics move a tape for hours, reverse within a day, and degrade the performance the standard exists to protect.

Why does my result differ from my last official taping?

Tape placement, time of day, hydration, who pulled the tape and how firmly: each shifts circumference by enough to move the result a point or more. Official procedure controls these variables; home measurement rarely does, and reaching around your own back tilts the tape upward at the spine, which reads low. Measure first thing in the morning with consistent landmarks and compare like with like. A stable gap between your self-measure and official results is normal and still useful for tracking.

Does a high ACFT score still exempt me from the body fat assessment?

Why doesn't this page use the Army's one-site abdominal method?

Because it was never published as an equation. The one-site method takes abdominal circumference at the navel, three times to the nearest half inch and averaged, together with body weight in pounds, and reads the percentage from published lookup tables, figures B-1 for men and B-2 for women. Sites that offer a one-site formula have fitted a curve through someone else's table. We use the multi-site method instead, which was equally authorised and whose coefficients were published in full in 1984.
