BMI chart by height and weight

A BMI chart turns two measurements into one number and shows you where that number falls. This page gives you three versions of it: the weight that marks each WHO boundary at your height, which is the version people actually need; the same boundaries under the WHO Asia-Pacific classification, which sits lower; and a traditional height-by-weight grid for anyone who came here expecting one.
Every figure below is generated from the same tested calculation engine that powers our calculators (weight divided by height in metres squared), so the chart and the tool can never drift apart. Nothing is rounded until the moment it is printed.
In brief
- BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared; the chart is simply that arithmetic done for you.
- Under the WHO standard classification the boundaries are 18.5, 25, 30, 35 and 40.
- Under the WHO Asia-Pacific classification, overweight starts at 23 and obesity at 25: a different, equally citable system.
- At 175 cm, the healthy-weight band runs from about 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg, a spread of nearly 20 kilograms.
- A chart cannot see muscle, so pair the number with a waist measurement before drawing any conclusion.
Healthy weight range by height (WHO standard)
This is the table most people are looking for: at your height, the weight at which each WHO category begins. Read across your height row: anything below the first column is underweight, the gap between the first two columns is the healthy range, and each column after that marks the start of the next category.
The width of that healthy band is the point worth noticing. At 170 cm it spans from about 53 kg to 72 kg. Nineteen kilograms of difference, all of it inside 'normal'. Where you sit within the band is decided by muscle, frame and fat distribution, not by the chart.

The WHO Asia-Pacific chart
The WHO's Western Pacific regional office publishes a separate classification, because body-composition research consistently finds that at the same BMI, many East, South and Southeast Asian populations carry more body fat (more of it visceral) and develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI levels. Overweight begins at 23 rather than 25, and obesity at 25 rather than 30.
Both systems come from the WHO, and both are correct within their own frame. This is why the same person can be 'normal' on one chart and 'overweight, at risk' on the other. Neither number is wrong; they are calibrated to different populations and purposes.

The traditional BMI grid
Find your height down the left, your weight across the top, and read the BMI where they meet. This is the chart that hangs in gyms and surgeries. It is the least useful of the three, because a grid this size has to round both inputs, but it is what a lot of people mean by 'BMI chart'.

The classification tables in full
Both recognised systems, written out. The WHO standard cut-offs were drawn from mortality and disease curves in largely European cohorts and adopted for international classification in the 1990s; the Asia-Pacific categories were published by WHO/IASO/IOTF in 2000.
A third layer exists and is often confused with the second: the WHO's 2004 Expert Consultation retained the standard international cut-offs for global comparability and added public-health action points at 23.0, 27.5, 32.5 and 37.5 for Asian populations. Those are trigger levels for screening, not a category table. Any chart that merges them has stopped being able to cite any of them.

How to read a BMI chart honestly
A chart tells you where your weight sits relative to your height, and nothing else. It cannot see whether the kilograms are muscle or fat, and it cannot see where the fat is, the two things that decide what the number means for your health.
Since January 2025, mainstream clinical guidance has formalised this limit: a raised BMI now needs at least one direct measure of fat distribution (waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio or waist-to-hip ratio) before excess body fat is confirmed. Thirty seconds with a tape measure resolves most of what a chart cannot.
- Boundaries are lines on a continuum: 24.9 and 25.1 are the same body.
- Adult charts are invalid under 18; children are assessed on BMI-for-age percentiles.
- Pregnancy, significant oedema and amputation each break the formula's assumptions.
- At the same BMI, older adults typically carry more fat and less muscle than younger ones.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for my height?
The healthy range is the same for every height in BMI terms (18.5 to 24.9 under the WHO standard classification), but it converts to a different weight range for each height, which is what the first table on this page shows. At 160 cm that band runs from about 47.4 kg to 63.7 kg; at 180 cm it runs from about 59.9 kg to 80.7 kg. The band is roughly twenty kilograms wide at most adult heights, and that width is genuine, not sloppiness.
Why do BMI charts sometimes show different categories for the same number?
Because more than one recognised classification system exists. The WHO standard international cut-offs put overweight at 25 and obesity at 30. The WHO Asia-Pacific classification, published by the same organisation for populations where risk appears at lower BMI levels, puts overweight at 23 and obesity at 25. A chart that shows one without naming it leaves you unable to tell which you are reading. This page shows both, labelled.
Is a BMI chart accurate for athletes?
No, and this is its best-documented failure. BMI counts total mass and cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so people who carry a lot of muscle read high while lean. Studies of professional and collegiate athletes routinely find large fractions classified overweight by BMI with body fat in the athletic range. If your BMI is raised but your waist is under half your height, that discordance is the signal, and the 2025 obesity framework treats it as not meeting the criteria for excess adiposity.
What BMI is considered obese?
Thirty and above under the WHO standard classification, subdivided into class I from 30, class II from 35 and class III from 40. Under the WHO Asia-Pacific classification, obesity starts at 25. Since 2025, clinical guidance has also separated preclinical obesity (excess fat with organs working normally) from clinical obesity, where organ function is already affected. That second distinction needs a doctor's assessment and cannot be read off any chart.
Can I use this chart for children?
No. Adult BMI categories are invalid for anyone under 18, because the amount of body fat that is healthy changes continuously through childhood and puberty. Children are assessed against BMI-for-age percentile charts specific to their age and sex; our child BMI calculator does exactly that, using the CDC growth reference. Applying an adult chart to a growing child produces a number with no defensible meaning.
How do I calculate BMI by hand?
In metric, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared: 78 kg at 1.75 m is 78 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 78 ÷ 3.0625 = 25.5. In imperial, multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and divide by your height in inches squared: 172 lb at 69 inches is (172 × 703) ÷ 4,761 = 25.4. The small difference is rounding in the unit conversion, not a different formula.
