Healthy waist size chart by height

A waist size chart answers a question a weight chart cannot: not how much of you there is, but where it is kept. This page prints the target that mainstream guidance now leads with, namely keeping your waist to less than half your height, worked out in centimetres and inches for every adult height from 147 cm to 196 cm, so you are not doing arithmetic on a phone with a tape measure in your other hand.

Underneath it sit the other thresholds that are actually citable: the WHO waist circumference action levels for men and women, the population-specific values the International Diabetes Federation publishes, and the waist-to-height bands themselves. They disagree with each other in places. This page shows where and why, rather than picking one and quietly hiding the rest.

Your waist target by height

This is the table the page exists for. Find your height, read across, and the second column is the waist measurement that sits exactly on a waist-to-height ratio of 0.5, half your height. Staying under it is the message NICE settled on in its January 2025 guideline, largely because it survives translation into a sentence a person can actually remember and act on.

The two outer columns give the rest of the scale. The 0.4 line is the bottom of the healthy band: a waist below it is unusually small for the height, which is not a diagnosis of anything, but is worth mentioning to a doctor if it arrived without you trying. The 0.6 line is where guidance stops calling the risk increased and starts calling it further increased.

Nothing in this table is sex-specific, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. The ratio carries the sex difference inside it: men are on average taller, so the threshold moves with them. One number does the work of two.

What a waist measurement actually measures

Weight tells you how much of you there is. A waist measurement tells you where it is stored, and that turns out to be the more informative question. Fat held under the skin on the hips, thighs and backside is metabolically fairly quiet. Fat held inside the abdomen, packed around the liver, pancreas and intestines (visceral fat) is not.

Visceral fat is metabolically active tissue. It drains into the portal circulation, delivering free fatty acids and inflammatory signalling molecules to the liver on their first pass, and it is the fat depot most tightly associated with insulin resistance, raised triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Two people of the same height and the same weight can carry very different amounts of it. A scale cannot tell them apart. A tape measure largely can.

That is why a waist measurement adds information to BMI rather than repeating it. Both the 2025 clinical framework for obesity and the current NICE guidance now treat a raised BMI as insufficient on its own: a direct measure of fat distribution is required before excess adiposity is confirmed. The waist is the cheapest such measure that exists, and the only one you can take at home in under a minute.

How to measure your waist, and the errors that dominate

The landmark matters more than the tape. The WHO protocol defines the site as the midpoint between the lowest palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest (the bony ridge at the top of the hip), measured against bare skin rather than over clothing. The NIH protocol uses the top of the iliac crest itself, which sits lower and typically reads a little larger. Either is defensible. Mixing the two between measurements is not, because it invents change that never happened.

Stand upright with your feet roughly hip width apart and your arms relaxed at your sides. Wrap the tape horizontally, parallel to the floor all the way round, and check the back in a mirror if you can. Pull it snug enough that it stays put without denting the skin. Then breathe out normally and read the number at the end of that breath. Do not draw the stomach in, and do not read at the top of a held breath.

Measure in the morning, before eating, and take two or three readings. If two readings differ by more than a centimetre, take a third and average them. Day-to-day variation of one to two centimetres from food, fluid and bowel content is completely normal and means nothing at all; the number worth tracking is the trend across weeks, taken the same way each time. Self-measurement agrees closely with technician measurement once the landmark is found properly; finding the landmark is the part people get wrong.

  • A sloping tape that rides up at the back reads small, and it is the single commonest error.
  • Measuring over a shirt or a waistband adds a centimetre or more.
  • Measuring at the navel out of habit: the navel moves with body shape and is not a fixed landmark.
  • Holding the breath in can conceal several centimetres, and conceals them again next time.
  • A fabric tape that has stretched with age reads short. Replace one that has gone soft.

WHO waist circumference thresholds

Before the ratio became the headline, the standard answer was a pair of fixed numbers for each sex, and those values are still what most clinical documents quote. They come from the WHO expert consultation held in Geneva in December 2008 and published in 2011, which reviewed the evidence linking waist circumference and waist-hip ratio to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mortality.

The lower figure marks the point at which risk starts to rise. The upper figure is where the WHO calls the risk substantially increased. They apply to adults and take no account of height at all, which is simultaneously their weakness and the reason they are so easy to use.

Population-specific thresholds (IDF)

The same waist does not carry the same risk everywhere. At an identical waist circumference, South Asian, Chinese and Japanese populations show on average more visceral fat and develop insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes at smaller measurements than populations of European descent. The International Diabetes Federation's 2006 consensus definition of the metabolic syndrome therefore lists population-specific waist values rather than one global pair.

It is worth being exact about what that is and is not. It is not a statement that some bodies are better or worse than others, and it is not a judgement about anybody. It is risk calibration: the measurement at which a given level of cardiometabolic risk shows up, in the population the data were collected from. Applying the European values everywhere would miss people who are already at risk; applying the lowest values everywhere would flag people who are not. Neither error is harmless.

Waist-to-height bands

The ratio itself is waist divided by height, with both measured in the same unit, so the result is a plain number with no unit attached. Inches with inches or centimetres with centimetres both work; mixing them does not. These are the bands this site uses, and they line up with the categories NICE published in 2025.

Why half your height works, and where it stops working

The appeal of 0.5 is that a single number does the job of many. Because the threshold scales with height, it needs no separate value for men and women, and it holds up across most ethnic groups without adjustment. Ashwell and Gibson's analysis of the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey found that a simple 0.5 boundary identified more adults at early health risk than the more complicated matrix of BMI and waist circumference it was compared against, a rare case where the simpler rule was also the better one.

The documented limitation is at the extremes of height. Waist circumference does not scale with height in a straight line: allometric analyses put the height exponent for waist at roughly 0.4 to 0.5, not the 1.0 that a plain ratio assumes. The practical consequence, set out in detail by Nevill and colleagues in 2023, is that a fixed 0.5 cut-off is harsh on short adults and lenient on tall ones. A 150 cm adult is asked to hold a 75 cm waist; a 195 cm adult is allowed 97.5 cm, which is already past the WHO increased-risk level for men.

That is not a reason to abandon the ratio, and no better rule has replaced it in guidance. It is a reason to read two tables on this page rather than one. If you are much shorter or much taller than average, check where you fall against the WHO fixed thresholds as well, and treat a disagreement between the two systems as a prompt for a conversation rather than as an answer in itself.

NICE places a limit of its own on the ratio: it applies it to adults with a BMI below about 35. Above that, central adiposity can reasonably be assumed and the extra measurement does not change what happens next.

What a waist measurement means at different heights

The point of the ratio is easiest to see in a grid. Read down to a waist measurement, then across the three heights: the same tape reading lands in a different band depending on who is wearing it.

A 90 cm waist reads 0.47 at 190 cm, comfortably inside the healthy band; 0.51 at 175 cm, which is just over the line; and 0.56 at 160 cm, which is well into the increased band. None of those readings is wrong. The tape is measuring the same distance each time. The ratio is asking a different question.

Waist as a vital sign in clinical practice

In 2020 the International Atherosclerosis Society and the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk published a consensus statement arguing that waist circumference should be measured routinely in clinical practice alongside BMI, and treated as a vital sign: the same category as blood pressure, taken as a matter of course rather than only when something already looks wrong.

The case rests on two findings. Waist circumference predicts cardiometabolic risk and mortality independently of BMI, so measuring height and weight alone discards information that costs nothing to collect. And a falling waist is a legitimate treatment target in its own right: moderate-intensity exercise and dietary change reliably reduce visceral fat, sometimes substantially, even when total body weight moves very little.

In practice the measurement is still taken inconsistently or skipped entirely, mostly because it needs a minute, a tape and a willingness to ask, and clinical time is short. That is the gap this page tries to close from the other side. It is a measurement you can take yourself, taking it correctly is a learnable skill, and a number you bring with you is a number that gets discussed.

What actually reduces a waist measurement

No exercise removes fat from the area it works. Abdominal training strengthens the muscle underneath the fat and, if anything, can add a small amount of girth. Waist reduction comes from a sustained energy deficit and from regular aerobic activity, and visceral fat happens to respond early and disproportionately to both, which is why the waist often moves before anything else does.

As a rough expectation rather than a promise: a centimetre or two a month at a moderate deficit, quicker in the first few weeks and slower afterwards. It is common for the tape to move while the scale does not. That combination usually means fat is going while lean mass is being held, which is exactly the outcome you want, and it is the reason to keep both numbers rather than only the one that is easier to collect.

Sleep, alcohol and untreated stress show up in this measurement more than they show up in weight, because they influence where fat is stored and not only how much of it there is. And the most reliable predictor of whether a reduced waist stays reduced is whether the change that produced it was something you could keep doing after the novelty wore off.

When the number should prompt a medical conversation

A waist measurement is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It earns its place by telling you when it is worth asking someone qualified, and these are the readings that should trigger that.

  • A waist-to-height ratio at or above 0.5, and particularly at or above 0.6, especially alongside a family history of type 2 diabetes or heart disease.
  • A waist above 102 cm in men or 88 cm in women, the WHO substantially increased level.
  • A waist rising steadily while your weight stays flat: fat redistributing inwards is a change worth knowing about.
  • A waist that fell without you trying to lose weight. That is a different conversation and a more urgent one.
  • Any raised reading alongside symptoms such as persistent thirst, unexplained fatigue or breathlessness on mild exertion.

What a clinician adds is everything a tape cannot see: blood pressure, fasting glucose or HbA1c, a lipid panel, and the context of your own history and medication. A raised waist is a reason to have those checked. It is not a result on its own, and no chart on this page can turn it into one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy waist size?

There are two defensible answers and they do not always agree. The height-based one is more useful: a healthy waist is anything under half your height, which is 80 cm at a height of 160 cm, 87.5 cm at 175 cm and 95 cm at 190 cm. The fixed WHO answer is under 94 cm for men and under 80 cm for women, with 102 cm and 88 cm marking substantially increased risk. If the two disagree for you, the ratio is usually the better guide, because it adjusts for your frame instead of ignoring it.

What should my waist be for my height?

Half of it, or less. Multiply your height by 0.5 and that is the upper edge of the healthy waist-to-height band: 74 cm at 148 cm tall, 82.5 cm at 165 cm, 90 cm at 180 cm and 97.5 cm at 195 cm. The first table on this page prints the same figure for every height between 147 and 196 cm, in centimetres and inches, together with the 0.4 line below the healthy band and the 0.6 line above it. Height and waist must be in the same unit for the ratio to mean anything.

Is a 40 inch waist bad?

Forty inches is 101.6 cm, which sits just under the WHO substantially increased threshold of 102 cm for men and well above the 88 cm equivalent for women. What it means for you depends on your height. At 190 cm it is a waist-to-height ratio of 0.53, only just over the line; at 175 cm it is 0.58; at 165 cm it is 0.62, which falls in the further increased band. So a 40 inch waist is a reason to work out the ratio rather than a verdict on its own, but at almost every adult height it is past the point where guidance says risk has started to rise.

How do I measure my waist properly?

Bare skin, standing upright, feet about hip width apart. Find the lowest rib on one side and the top of your hip bone below it, and measure at the midpoint between them. For many people that is roughly at or just above the navel, but the navel itself is not the landmark and it moves with body shape. Wrap the tape level all the way round, snug without compressing the skin, then breathe out normally and read at the end of that breath. Take two or three readings, average them, and measure in the morning before eating so the conditions match next time.

Does waist size matter more than weight?

For cardiometabolic risk, usually yes. Waist circumference predicts type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and mortality independently of BMI, because it partly reflects visceral fat (the fat packed around the organs), while body weight cannot separate that from muscle or from fat carried on the hips and thighs. This is why a 2020 international consensus statement argued for measuring waist routinely as a vital sign, and why current guidance asks for a measure of fat distribution before a raised BMI is treated as excess adiposity. The honest answer is that you want both numbers: weight tracks the total, waist tracks where it sits.

How quickly can a waist measurement change?

More slowly than a bathroom scale, and more meaningfully. From one day to the next a waist moves a centimetre or two on food, fluid and bowel content alone, so a single reading tells you very little; the trend across four to six weeks is the signal. At a moderate energy deficit with regular aerobic activity, a centimetre or two a month is a reasonable expectation rather than a promise, faster at first and slower later. Visceral fat tends to go early, which is why the tape sometimes moves while the scale does not, and that pattern is a good result rather than a stalled one.
