How long does safe weight loss take?

The search is almost always a date. How long to lose ten kilograms. How long to reach a wedding weight. How long before the jeans fit. The honest answer is a range of weeks at a named rate, not a calendar day, because the rate itself is a choice and the body does not hold a constant rate even after you have chosen one.
This site will plan 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75 kilograms a week, or a cap of one per cent of current body weight, after the same calorie floors as the deficit calculator. It will not print a finish date. A date implies the first week's pace will hold to the last kilogram, and Hall and colleagues showed that a static 3,500 kilocalorie per pound rule can predict about twice the annual loss a dynamic model does. This guide walks the conversion, names the rails that stretch the calendar, and shows why late kilograms take longer than the first ones.

Why a date is the wrong answer
A date collapses two separate questions into one number. The first is how much tissue you intend to lose. The second is how large a daily energy gap you can hold without breaking the floors or losing an ugly share of lean mass. Multiply kilograms by 7,700, divide by a 500 kilocalorie deficit, and you get a date. That arithmetic assumes expenditure stays put, intake is logged perfectly, and none of the loss is water. None of those assumptions holds for a real adult over months.
Hall, Sacks, Chandramohan and colleagues quantified the error in The Lancet in 2011. A static Wishnofsky conversion treats every kilocalorie as if it came from adipose tissue at a fixed density. A dynamic model lets expenditure fall as mass falls. The static rule over-predicts annual loss by a wide margin. That is why this site shows weeks at each allowed pace and then says the last weeks will slip.
NICE guideline NG246 treats overweight and obesity management as a long intervention, not a countdown. The clinical question is whether the rate is safe and whether the person can hold the intake. A wedding date is not a physiological input. If the date only works at two per cent of body weight a week, the date is wrong rather than ambitious.
The 7,700 kilocalorie planning constant
The conversion this site uses is about 7,700 kilocalories per kilogram. It is the Wishnofsky 3,500 kilocalories per pound figure expressed in kilograms (3,500 divided by 0.45359237 is about 7,716, which we round to 7,700). It is a planning constant for mixed tissue, not the energy density of pure triglyceride.
Pure fat tissue is closer to 9,000 kilocalories per kilogram of stored triglyceride, but a kilogram lost on the scale is never pure fat. It includes water, glycogen and a share of lean mass. Using 7,700 for a fortnight of scale change therefore overstates the fat that moved. Using it to sketch months of planned loss is still the least bad public number, provided you treat the result as a band.
Worked through: an 80 kilogram adult who wants to reach 72 kilograms has 8 kilograms to lose. At 7,700 kilocalories per kilogram that is 61,600 kilocalories. A 500 kilocalorie daily deficit implies about 123 days, or 17.5 weeks. At 0.5 kilograms a week the same 8 kilograms is 16 weeks on a linear table. Those two figures are close because 0.5 kilograms a week is about 550 kilocalories a day. They will both be optimistic by the time the person is 74 kilograms, because the smaller body costs less to run.

Safe weekly rates, and the one per cent cap
The paces printed on the weight-loss time calculator are gentle (0.25 kg a week), steady (0.5 kg), brisk (0.75 kg), and a site maximum of one per cent of current body weight. For an 80 kilogram adult the cap is 0.8 kilograms a week. For a 60 kilogram adult it is 0.6, so the 'brisk' 0.75 row will be pulled down by the cap before the calorie floor is even checked.
The one per cent cap exists because faster loss raises the share that is lean tissue. CDC adult weight-loss advice has long sat near 0.5 to 1 kilogram a week for most people. That range is a public-health band, not a personal optimum. Smaller adults and people already near the healthy range belong at the slow end. Larger adults can sometimes sit nearer the cap without the same lean-mass cost, which is why the cap is a percentage rather than a fixed kilogram figure.
Each pace is then run through calorieTarget. If 0.75 kilograms a week would drop a woman below 1,200 kilocalories, or a man below 1,500, or anyone below 80 per cent of estimated TDEE, the daily calories rise and the weekly kilograms fall. The weeks in that row get longer. The table names which rail fired. That is the difference between a pace you can hold and a crash-diet date.
The floors that stretch the calendar
Four rails bind every target this site will plan. The relative floor is 80 per cent of estimated maintenance. The absolute floors are 1,500 kilocalories a day for men and 1,200 for women. The weekly rate cap is one per cent of body weight. The goal-weight floor is a BMI of 18.5 for the entered height. Whichever binds first wins.
A 55 kilogram woman with a predicted maintenance near 1,700 kilocalories cannot take a 750 kilocalorie cut. Twenty per cent of 1,700 is 340, and the 1,200 floor sits 500 below maintenance. The planned rate will be closer to 0.3 kilograms a week than to 0.75. The weeks to a 6 kilogram loss stretch from a naive 8 to something nearer 20. That is not the calculator being cautious for sport. Below those floors, meeting iron, calcium and B-vitamin reference intakes from ordinary food becomes hard, and lean-tissue loss climbs as a share of the total.
A goal below BMI 18.5 is rejected outright. The healthy range has a bottom as well as a top. If the only way to hit the date is to leave the range, the date is the thing that changes.
Why late kilograms take longer
Maintenance falls as mass falls, even before anyone mentions adaptation. In Mifflin-St Jeor, each kilogram lost reduces predicted basal rate by ten kilocalories a day. Multiplied by a sedentary factor of 1.2, that is about twelve kilocalories a day of maintenance per kilogram. An 80 kilogram sedentary man who reaches 72 kilograms has lost about 96 kilocalories a day of cost before any hormonal effect is counted. A deficit that started at 500 is now about 400 if intake was never recalculated.
Adaptive thermogenesis adds a further, smaller residual: expenditure a little below what the new size predicts. The metabolic adaptation guide on this site covers the size of that residual. For ordinary losses it is a headwind of tens to a couple of hundred kilocalories, not a broken metabolism. Non-exercise movement often falls by more than the residual, which is why a step target belongs on the same page as the weekly average.
The practical translation is to recalculate TDEE after every five kilograms, or any large change in job or training, and to read the time table as a first-half estimate. What to do when the table and the scale disagree
A linear table is a plan. The seven-day average is a measurement. When they disagree for three or four weeks, the measurement wins. The usual causes, in order of how often they explain a stall, are intake higher than the log (oils, drinks, weekends), water and glycogen hiding fat loss, a quiet drop in daily steps, and only then a true shortfall in expenditure.
Do not throw the plan away in week two. Do not double the deficit in week three. Hold the intake, weigh daily under the same conditions, and compare the week-four average with the week-one average. If the gap is still large after a month, recheck the log before you touch the target. A hundred kilocalories and a recovered step count fix more stalls than a new diet identity.
If loss is running faster than one per cent of starting weight a week, slow down even if you like the number. Fast scale movement bought with lean tissue is a shorter route to a rebound. Protein at about 2.2 grams per kilogram while cutting is the other half of that protection, and it is the figure the time calculator prints beside each row.

How long does it take to lose 10 kilograms safely?
At 0.5 kilograms a week a linear table says 20 weeks. At 0.25 kilograms it says 40. At 0.75 it says about 13. The real answer is longer than the table once body weight has fallen, because maintenance falls with mass. A 10 kilogram loss at a rate you can hold is usually a four to ten month job for an adult who starts well above the healthy range, not a six-week project. Run the time calculator with your height, weight and goal. If a rail binds, the weeks rise and that longer figure is the one to believe.
Is 1 kilogram a week a safe rate?
For a 100 kilogram adult, 1 kilogram is the one per cent cap this site will plan, and it sits at the top of the public-health band CDC describes. For a 70 kilogram adult, 1 kilogram is about 1.4 per cent of weight and this site will not plan it. Safety here means the share of loss that stays fat rather than lean, plus whether the calorie target still clears the 1,200 or 1,500 floor. A rate that is fine at 110 kilograms is not automatically fine at 65. Use the percentage, not a favourite kilogram figure.
Why will this site not give me a finish date?
A date treats the first week's pace as a constant. Expenditure falls as you get smaller, water moves the scale by a kilogram or more, and logged intake drifts. Hall's 2011 Lancet paper showed that a static calorie-per-pound rule over-predicts annual loss compared with a model that lets expenditure change. Printing a Saturday in March would be a more precise lie. Weeks at each allowed pace, with a warning that late weeks slip, is the honest form of the same answer.
How many calories is a kilogram of body fat?
The planning constant on this site is about 7,700 kilocalories per kilogram of mixed tissue, from the old 3,500 kilocalories per pound figure. Pure stored fat is denser than that, and a kilogram on the scale is never pure fat. Use 7,700 to sketch a deficit and a time range. Do not use it to convert a two-week scale change into a precise fat figure. What if I have a deadline I cannot move?
Then the goal weight moves, not the floors. Work backwards from the weeks you actually have at 0.5 kilograms a week, or at the cap if you are large enough for it to bind later. A 12-week window at 0.5 kilograms is about 6 kilograms. If the original goal was 12 kilograms, you are planning 6 kilograms and a maintenance hold, not 12 kilograms in a panic. A deadline is a reason to shrink the target. It is not a reason to drop below 1,200 or 1,500 kilocalories without clinical supervision.
